as a song, not to laugh
(2016)
It is the 118th death. It was Chuseok. More time has passed than I expected. Many things have changed, and yet many things remain the same. By the time I realized that the dazzling scenery of the cleanroom was not meant for me, everything around her had already changed. Her vision is fading, and she cannot lie down, enduring sleepless nights while seated. Though it wasn’t what she wanted, she must endure the landscape laid before her. After a period of guilt and resentment, she began to fight. Tomorrow marks 10 years since this fight began.
They said she speaks as if she is singing. Though her speech is impaired due to complications from brain surgery, it helps ease the difficulty a little. She also said that the nerves in her eyes are severed, so she can no longer cry. Now, the only way she can express her emotions is through laughter. Together with Banolim, I met and interviewed workers and families of those who contracted rare diseases while working at Samsung Semiconductor, and I documented their stories through photographs.
