Temporary Landscapes
(2009-2011)
사진이 존재증명과 부재증명의 수단이라면 도시의 풍경조차 그러하다. 개발은 파괴와 창조의 투쟁의 과정이다. 이 끝없 는 투쟁의 특징은 모든것을 임시적으로 만든다는 것에 있다. 개발의 주체이자 객체인 정주적 인간의 삶은 이 도시의 변화 와 함께 변화된다. 이 과정에서 매순간 모든 것은 임시적 존재로만 의미를 갖게되었다.
하지만 우리에게 이 모든 임시적 존재들은 일상속에서 쉽게 각인되지 않는다. 이것이 가능한 것은 개발의 과정은 우리에게 은폐되고 또한 도시적 풍경을 통해 시각적으로 반복학습되기 때문일것이다. 우리에게 허락된 개발에 대한 각인은 철거민들의 이야기나 부동산경기등의 뉴스거리로 대표되는 단편적이고 파편적인 타자화된 도시 이야기들 뿐이다.
정작 우리의 삶을 규정하는 도시의 본질적 변화에 대한 사유는 허락되지 않는다. 그 근저에는 물론 이데올로기의 충돌과 다중의 욕망이 서로 얽혀 있고 이를 주도하는 이들은 건설자본과 그와 결탁한 세력이겠지만 우리 역시 그들의 결정에 암묵적 동의를 하고 있기 때문이다. 이 녹록치 않은 삶을 구원해 줄 메시아로서 우리는 도시의 개발을 받아들여왔다.
그로인해 우리의 정주적 공간은 해체되어 가고 공동체는 파괴되었으며 그 메시아의 요구에 따라 우리는 조금씩 조금씩 주변부로 물러나게 되었다. 결국 우리는 새로운 노마드적 생활양식을 강요받았고 이 도시인들의 노마드적 삶은 스스로의 삶을 위태롭게만 한다. 파괴를 위해 창조해야만 하는 도시의 운명은 스스로 임시적 존재가 되었고 이를 추종하는 모든이 들의 삶조차 임시적으로 전락시키는 기재로 작용하게 된것이다.
도시인들인 우리들에게조차 때로는 아름답고 때로는 괴기한 이 풍경들은 과거의 부재를 증명하고 또한 스스로 부재될 운명을 존재로써 증명한다. 안타깝게도 이제 우리가 인식할 수 있는 것은 오직 이러한 임시적인 풍경들일 뿐이고 스스로 이 풍경의 한 조각이 되어가는 임시적 존재로서의 자화상 뿐이다.
I have been digging into the theme of development for a very long period of time. During that period, my works have been about the urbanization and redevelopment projects. I wandered from place to place to find some temporary objets in cities, observing the cycle of disappearance and rebirth. The time I spent has taught me that all the sceneries of cities are temporary in and of itself.
If photography is the means of proving existence and absence, it is also the case with the scenes of cities. Development is the same as the process of struggle from destruction to creation. The key feature of this endless struggle is to make everything temporary. Human’s life, which is the main agent and the object of development at the same time, changes along with the changes in the city they live in. In this process, each and every object has its own meanings as a temporary object.
However, all the temporary things are not easily engraved in our memory in everyday lives. All of this has been possible because the development process is concealed from us and we repetitively learn it with our eyes by watching urban sceneries. The only available channels that can imprint the images of development in our mind are somewhat fragmented and “otherized” - for example, listening to the stories of evicted residents or watching the news about housing markets.
In fact, we are not allowed to contemplate on the essential changes that define our lives. The clash of ideologies and desires of the crowds are intertwined at the very foundation of such ignorance. Also, those who drive the development are the capital of construction companies and vested interests that connive with those powers. But the thing is, we are also have a tacit agreement with their decisions. As a messiah and savior who can redeem us from life’s ordeal, we have admitted the development of cities.
It has led to the dissolution of space for settlement and the destruction of communities. To meet the demands of that messiah, we have been marginalized and squeezed out. In the end, urban residents were forced to live a life of nomads. Such lifestyle ended up threatening the lives of themselves. The fate of this city, which must create new things for the sake of destruction, has served as a mechanism that makes supporters’ lives nothing other than makeshift beings. In and of itself, it has made itself a temporary being a well.
Sometimes, such scenes are seen beautiful but eccentric in our perspective – even though we have long lived in those cities. It proves the absence of the past and at the same time proves its fate of becoming temporary ones. Unfortunately, the things now we can recognize are nothing other than temporary scenes. We are now able to see the self-portrait of ours – which is voluntarily becoming a mere part of the temporary scenary around us.
